Teams from Grand Marais to Moose Lake took advantage of a few days of good weather and converged on Esko for the Polar Vortex meet Tuesday, April 16.

Teams didn't accrue points and no medals were handed out, but the time trials will help athletes — many of whom were competing outside for the first time this season — judge where they stand heading into the heart of the spring season.

Silver Bay junior Corrina Marolt turned a few heads with her top finishes in the 100- and 200-meter races. Marolt won the 100-meter race in 13.5 seconds and the 200 meters in 27.9 seconds.

Distance runners dominated for Two Harbors, with Autumn Smith, Grace Swanson and Isaac Swanson all picking up wins. Smith won the 800-meter girls race in 2 minutes 32.3 seconds and Grace Swanson took the 1,600 meters in 5:53.2. Isaac Swanson won the boys 800-meter race in 2:04.1.

The Agates and the Mariners are scheduled to compete next at the Two Harbors Invitational at 3:30 p.m Tuesday, April 23. As a result of field conditions in Two Harbors, the location has been moved to Esko.
