Four Two Harbors-Silver Bay swimmers won two individual events and then combined to take two of three relays as the Agates won at Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 109-74 on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Kaylee Overby won the individual medley and breastroke, Jada Larson won the butterfly and breaststroke, Riley Larson won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle and Kate Thomasen won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races.

The same group of seniors also won the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays, with only the 200-yard relay keeping their names off all the swimming events at the meet.

Coach Heather Mayfield said she was impressed with the team’s focus as they make their way through the regular season with the goal of repeating as section champions in the 400-yard freestyle relay and potentially adding some more hardware to their trophy case. Three of the four also took individual events, with only Thomasen missing out.

Thomasen qualified for state in 2018, but finished second in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events to CEC’s Makayla Suominen, who is swimming this year at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

“That’s always the end goal. We always talk about; it’s what were swimming for,” Mayfield said. “We talk about we don’t swim for the dual meets or the invitationals — we’re ultimately swimming for getting down to state. Each one of these is a stepping stone to get us there and to be a stronger team.”

Mayfield also said she’s been impressed with how the foursome has developed into team leaders this season.

“It’s been fun to watch them step into that leadership role and motivating the younger crew,” Mayfield said. “It’s been really exciting to see them motivate the team and watching them cast their shadow onto the rest of the team has been great.”

The team will get a preview of the state meet this weekend at an invitational 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the University of Minnesota.
