Silver Bay rallied from a run-down twice against North Shore rival Two Harbors to come away with a 4-3 win at home Friday, May 17.
The contest was the polar opposite of the first game the teams played, a 21-14 Mariner win May 10 in Two Harbors. In their first meeting, the teams combined for more than 40 hits in the offensive explosion.
By contrast, Silver Bay eighth-grader Danika Thompson allowed just three hits and struck out seven, while Agate freshman Jasmine Heikkila allowed six hits and struck out two.
Missed opportunities and errors on the base paths proved costly to Two Harbors, however. The Agates had runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the sixth inning, but failed to score. Heikkila was called out for runner interference, forcing Elizabeth Scoggin to return to third base instead of scoring the game-tying run.
Scoggin was tagged out in a close play at home plate for the second out of the inning and Emma Swanson struck out to end the Two Harbors threat.
"Our base running cost us at least two runs," coach Chris Lemke said. "But we knew coming in it was a young team coming in and there were going to be some ups and downs."
Agates' season ends in Virginia
Two Harbors' season ended Tuesday, May 21, with a 14-1 loss to Virginia in the Section 7AA tournament.
The Agates (6-12) struggled to score through much of the season, but there were some bright spots. Heikkila continued to develop as a pitcher and sophomore Shayla Marxen emerged as a strong offensive player, leading the team with 25 hits and two home runs. Marxen also was second on the team with 19 RBIs, just behind senior Tori Bott.
Two Harbors only had two seniors in Bott and Grace Hietala this season. What's more, Emily Olson - the only junior slated to play - was lost before the season due to an injury sustained playing basketball.
If Olson returns to her 2018 form, the Agates will have two strong pitchers and will have a deep roster of with plenty of experience.
Mariners move on
Silver Bay freshmen Anna Thompson and Livia Hoff combined for five RBIs in a 13-3, five inning win over Cook County on Tuesday, May 21.
Hoff ended the game with a triple and two RBIs, while Anna Thompson drove in three runs.
Danika Thompson allowed just three hits over seven innings and struck out seven batters.
Silver Bay (11-7) was scheduled to play Cherry on Thursday, May 23, in Grand Rapids. Results were unavailable by presstime.
