Softball: Agate bats come alive in loss to Marshall
After two games scoring two runs or less, Two Harbors batters heated up late as the Agates nearly completed a comeback in an 11-9 home loss to Duluth Marshall on Wednesday, April 24.
Senior Tori Bott led the charge, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs. Sophomore Shayla Marxen was also 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Two Harbors found itself down 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Agates bats really came to life and scoring four runs on five hits to cut the deficit to 1.
The Hilltoppers scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, but Two Harbors loaded the bases with two outs after cutting the lead back to two when Marxen drove sophomore Emily Seipke in.
Duluth Marshall relief pitcher Greta Leitz-Najarian made a game saving play to make the second out when she jumped up and caught a hard hit line drive from Agate senior Grace Hietala. If Hietala's ball had made it past Leitz-Najarian, two runs could have scored with just two outs and Marxen and Bott next up in the order.
Despite the loss, Two Harbors coach Chris Lemke was pleased with the way his team had responded after a tough 12-2 loss to Moose Lake-Willow River the day before. The Agates have just two seniors and the rest of the team are sophomores and younger.
"It's a young team, they haven't seen a lot of pitchers and you kind of saw it today," Lemke said. "In the field, we were making some young player mistakes, on the bases we were making some young player mistakes — but they really battled. They hit the ball really well and it could have gone either way...the cool thing about a younger team is that you know by the end of the season they are going to be a lot better."
Two Harbors freshman pitcher Jasmine Heikkila pitcher seven innings allowing 11 runs and striking out 5 in the game.
Two Harbors is next scheduled to play a home game against Pine City at noon Saturday, April 27.
