Two Harbors senior Elise Poe-Johnson tallied a hat trick — including two goals in a three minute stretch — to give the Agates a 6-0 home win over Zimmerman in the first round of the Section 7A playoffs Thursday, Oct. 10.

Two Harbors will play Cloquet-Carlton — a 4-0 winner over Princeton on Thursday, Oct. 10 — in the Section 7A quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Egerdahl Field in Proctor. The Lumberjacks were the last team to beat Two Harbors, a tough 5-0 loss Sept. 23.

Poe-Johnson scored her first goal in the eighth minute when she caught Thunder goalie Josie Rowley out of position and tapped the ball into the net.

“I really rely on my teammates for those through balls,” Poe-Johnson said. “Once they get me those balls — their defense was pushed up a lot — I knew if I was on the line I could get past them. If I stayed confident and stay in control, I knew I could dribble up because the goalie wasn’t coming out and I could just lay it up in the corner."

Junior Morgan Beardsley snuck another goal past Rowley in the 32nd minute to give Two Harbors a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Poe-Johnson added two more goals in the 43rd and 46th minutes, with teammates Grace Swanson and Emily Seipke picking up late goals.

Two Harbors has won six straight games and has outscored opponents 46-2 in that stretch.

Coach Tom Szendrey was impressed with the teams passing, poise and their growing confidence to shoot from almost anywhere on the field.

“I think they all played with confidence,” Szendrey said. “They have the confidence to shoot — all of our attackers — and I think that’s been increasing in the second half of the season. They’re not just relying on Elise or Morgan — I think that’s been a big difference. You have Grace taking a shot from 25 yards out and scoring. That’s something they didn’t have the confidence to do earlier in the season.”
