Two Harbors stepped off the field after a 12-0 defeat at Hermantown Friday, Aug. 30, the Agates had plenty of reason to be down.

Less than 24 hours after losing their season opener to Superior 15-1, the Agates lost by another dozen goals. Instead of having their heads hung down, the boys were handing out high-fives and congratulating each other.

The fact that the team was playing is a small victory in itself. Two Harbors — in just its second season back at the varsity level — nearly had to forfeit the 2019 season after only 11 players came out to the initial practices.

After a week of recruiting and a canceled game against St. Anthony Village, the Agate numbers swelled to 17 players and the decision was made to go forward with the season.

Coach Kyle Chalupsky knows the won’t win many games this season — especially with four players on the team that have no prior experience playing soccer.

“Honestly, I have kids out there playing that are still learning the rules,” he said.

As the team continues to learn the game and each other, the losses in 2019 will start to pile up, but Two Harbors is building for the future and Chalupsky hopes that means more wins in 2020 and beyond.

Two Harbors (0-2) is next scheduled to play at Proctor at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10.
