For the first since 2017, boys from the Two Harbors-Cook County varsity Nordic ski team took to the trails at the Korkki Nordic Center for the team’s home meet Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Numbers for the boys have been down the last few years and the team hasn’t had skiers in the varsity race since Mikael Overby was part of the team in 2017. That season Overby became the first Agate boy to qualify for the state meet in more than 20 years — the first to accomplish the feat since Agate coach Kevin Hudson.

Boys have been competing most of this year and the last couple years at the junior varsity and junior high levels. Coaches have worked to make sure skiers are ready to make the jump to the next level.

Freshman Ian Thorpe was the top Agate finisher in 42nd place with a time of 26:26.6 with sophomore Cyrus Myers finishing about a minute later in 44th.

Junior Cedar Gordon was the top finisher for the THCC girls. Gordon’s time of 27:26.6 was good enough for the 33rd spot.

The Agates will next compete at the Cook County/Two Harbors Invite at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Pincushion Mountain near Grand Marais.
