Two Harbors was looking at its first 0-2 start since 2015 after Pine City’s Caleb Fromm scored on a 68-yard run with less than 2 minutes to play and take a 17-13 lead in a home game Friday, Sept. 6.

The defense had played well, allowing just nine points in the first 48 minutes of play, Two Harbors coach Tom Nelson said.

“We felt like our defense was playing well, then we gave up that big play,” Nelson said. “It was just like, ‘Man, you gotta be kidding me.’ We didn’t tackle well; we didn’t take good angles.”

The run-heavy Agate offense isn’t built to move 70 yards in less than 2 minutes, Nelson said, but he was confident his players were up for the challenge.

“Honestly, I was pretty confident that we could get in a position to have a chance,” Nelson said. “Cole made some nice throws and obviously, we made some nice receptions. The big thing was the kids were right away like, ‘Let’s go get this.’ They were not packing it in, they were not down and they did a nice job marching down the field.”

In less than a minute the Agates moved the ball to the Pine City 28-yard line and quarterback Cole Komarek connected with perhaps his most unlikely receiver — senior Karsen Holm, who is playing with a cast on his hand because of broken wrist — to give the Agates a 20-17 win.

“Karsen opened up and Cole made a heck of a throw and actually the kid came back and had decent coverage,” Nelson said. “It was a great catch, especially with a club on his hand.”

As a team, Two Harbors finished with 206 yards rushing, led by Holm with 83 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Komarek finished 5-for-11 and 87 yards passing, including catches by five different receives.

Two Harbors (1-1) is scheduled to play at Esko on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. The Agates defeated Esko twice in 2018, including a 14-0 win in the Section 7AAA semifinals.
