Football: Agates down Esko

Two Harbors took advantage of seven Esko turnovers to secure a 19-12 victory — the Agates' first win in Esko since 2009.

Senior Joey Marker scored two touchdowns in a game the Agates believed they had in hand before a furious comeback attempt by Esko.

Eskomo quarterback Aaron Moore was on the run throughout the first half. Moore showed some quickness in escaping Agate pressure, but also was responsible for multiple first-half turnovers, including an interception by Marker.

Marker also put the Agates up 7-0 when he broke free for a 22-yard scoring run with six minutes remaining in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Two Harbors looked to run away with the game after another Esko fumble led to a Cole Komarek touchdown from a yard out, making the score 13-0.

The Eskomos found life late in the third quarter when senior Mason Vinje took over at quarterback and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Eli Blue. The Eskomos cut the Agate lead to one point with a second 20-yard touchdown from Vinje — this time to Preston Lowe with about 6:22 to play.

Esko failed in its attempt at both 2-point conversions — the second try ending with yet another fumble recovered by Two Harbors.

Esko forced the Agates to punt on the ensuing possession, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave Two Harbors a fresh set of downs. The Agates marched down the field and extended their lead on a 19-yard touchdown run by Marker.

The Two Harbors score gave Esko one last chance after the Agates kicked off following Marker's touchdown. If Marker had been tackled, the Agates could have taken a knee to run out the clock since the Eskomos had no timeouts left, but were instead forced to kick the ball back to Esko.

Fortunately for the Agates, Vinje couldn't engineer a 65-yard drive with less than a minute to play and no timeouts.

Two Harbors (2-1) will play Pine City on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in Two Harbors.
