Jayden Ruberg's season got off to a hot start Friday, Aug. 24, when the Two Harbors senior receiver and defensive back caught a touchdown pass and picked off a pair of Crosby-Ironton passes in the Agates' 28-14 season-opening win.

Two Harbors quarterback Cole Komarek connected with Ruberg and Joey Marker for touchdowns in the first half. Komarek hit Ruberg for an 83-yard strike late in the first quarter and connected with Marker late in the second from 26 yards out in his first start for the Agates.

It was an unusual start for coach Tom Nelson, who typically runs a double wing-style offense that relies on a powerful running game.

While two of the first three scores came through the air, the Agates still rushed for 218 yards and Komarek's touchdowns accounted for two of his three completions. Komarek finished 3-of-7 passing with 119 yards.

Marker led the Agates with 68 yards rushing and Wyatt Haugan had 65 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Dylan Barrick had 30 yards rushing to go with a 15-yard scoring run.

Defensively, the Agates held Crosby-Ironton in check on the ground, allowing just 28 yards on 21 carriers. Ranger quarterback Matthew Christopher was 9-for-20 passing for 194 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Andrew Hulst had seven tackles for Two Harbors, including a sack and forced fumble, which he then recovered.

Two Harbors was scheduled to open its home schedule Thursday, Aug. 30, against Duluth Denfeld. Results were unavailable by press time.

Two Harbors will begin Section 7AAA play at Esko on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m.
