What college or professional athlete inspires you and why?

Hicham El Guerrouj. He has the world record for the mile and that's pretty cool. He has asthma and I have asthma — he was actually diagnosed with asthma during his career. He had set the world record for the mile, but he had never won gold at the Olympics and he finally did after he was diagnosed at the Athens Games (2004).

What is one of your most memorable moments as an athlete?

In eighth grade, I ran the 1,600 meters at the section (track) meet and I was running against (Moose Lake-Willow River's) Ethan Olson and (Greenway's) Geno Urbohm. Geno and Ethan went way out ahead and I figured if I wanted a shot (to qualify for state) I had to go with them. ... We all stayed together and with about 220 meters left and they broke off and I got left behind. I didn't qualify for state, but I PR'ed by a ton: 4 minutes, 38 seconds.

What is your favorite activity or hobby outside of sports?

I like solving Rubik's cubes. It's just trying to get faster and trying to recognize the patterns. There's a bunch of different cubes, not just the three-by-threes, out there and it's fun learning how to solve those.
