William Kelley High School will be joining the North Shore Storm cooperative cross-country team when the fall season begins.
The Lake Superior School District Board unanimously approved Silver Bay joining the co-op during its meeting Tuesday, June 11.
Kelley activities director Kelly Ollila wrote that in the past, Silver Bay has not asked to join the program because fears adding the school would force the program to compete at the Class AA level. After talking with principals, coaches and activities directors at Cook County and Two Harbors, she said there was support for the idea. Enrollment numbers will likely not force a move to Class AA.
Ollila said transportation costs should be low since Silver Bay students could be picked up by Cook County buses going to meets south of Silver Bay and Two Harbors buses could pick runners up in meets north of Silver Bay.
There would be a need for a coach in Silver Bay to oversee practices. Teams primarily practice separately through the season, with them coming together for a retreat prior to the season for meets.
