Boys basketball: Ruberg refuses to let Agates lose
Two Harbors senior Jayden Ruberg scored 11 straight points in the final three minutes and finished with a school record 58 points in a 80-79 win at Silver Bay Thursday, Jan. 31.
The Agates were down 76-69 in the waning minutes. Two Harbors hadn't beaten Silver Bay since 2015, when Ruberg was an eighth-grader, mostly watching from the bench.
Instead of watching Silver Bay pull away in the final few minutes, Ruberg flipped the narrative, leading the Agates on a 11-3 run to close out the game and pick up their first win over the Mariners in four years. Only a 3-pointer by Silver Bay junior Riley Tiboni as time expired ended the Mariners' scoring drought over the final few minutes.
Instead of forcing the ball out of Ruberg's hands and one of the other Agates to step up and score, Silver Bay looked to limit their touches and dared Ruberg to beat them.
Ruberg was only too happy to oblige. Ruberg was devastating from all over the floor, hitting 10 3-pointers and driving past Silver Bay defenders when they closed out to contest the outside shots.
Silver Bay junior Riley Tiboni led Silver Bay with 30 points that included eight 3-pointers of his own. Weston Monson scored 24 for the Mariners and Mason Ollman scored 20.
Ruberg's 58 points was the second time he set a school record for points in a single game this season and he followed up his performance in Silver Bay with 43 points in a 70-59 win over Cook County on Friday, Feb. 1, in Grand Marais. Ruberg is leading the area in scoring with 35 points a game so far this season.
Ruberg's performance this season has led Two Harbors (6-10) to double its win total from a season ago with 10 games left on its schedule before the Section 7AA tournament begins March 5.
The Agates are next scheduled to play Moose Lake-Willow River on Friday, Feb. 8, in Moose Lake.
The Mariners (7-9) topped Wrenshall Friday, Feb. 2, in Wrenshall and are scheduled to play at Cromwell-Wright at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8.
