Basketball: McGregor edges Mariners

Silver Bay senior Jenny Walewski hit a 3-point shot to tie McGregor, but the shot was waved off by referees who said time expired and the Mariners lost to Mercuries 39-36 on Friday, Dec. 15, in McGregor.

Coach Dan Johnson said Silver Bay played well defensively, holding McGregor's top scorer Shelby Kelly to just five points.

"Overall our defense played well but we struggled with consistency on the offensive end," Johnson said.

Kelly also guarded Mariner top scorer Jocelyn Russell and prevented Russell from developing an offensive rhythm and holding her to just seven points.

Silver Bay senior Mita Frericks led the Mariners in scoring with 11 points and Alexxa DeQuevedo scored 10. Other scorers included Walewski with five points, Carina Marolt with two and Julia Littlewolf with one point.
