Silver Bay senior Jocelyn Russell scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Mariners to a 48-34 victory over Duluth Denfeld on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Duluth.

Silver Bay built a halftime lead of 31-19 based on solid defense and rebounding. In the second half, the Mariners maintained the strong defensive play, but their shooting percentage remained a problem for the team as they went just 17-for-69 in the game.

"Our shooting percent was still an issue but our defense was able to hold and we rebounded well," coach Dan Johnson said. "We applied full court pressure the entire game and this caused some issues for them when we needed it to."

Other scorers against Duluth Denfeld included\ Jenny Walewski with eight points, Alexxa DeQuevedo with seven and Mita Frericks and Lily Lewis with five each.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, Silver Bay trounced Northeast Range 61-16 with Russell again leading the way with 14 points.

DeQuevedo, Corinna Marolt and Julia Littlewolf combined to frustrate the Nighthawks' leading scorer shayler Lislegard and held the team to just 10 first half points. The strong defensive performance allowed the Mariners to relax a little on offense and shots started to fall, the Silver Bay shooting percentage reaching nearly 34 percent.

Other scorers against Northeast Range included: Frericks with 12 points; Walewski and DeQuevedo with 10 each; Marolt and Amiah Mitchell with four each; Deynah Barstow with three; and Lewis and Littlewolf with two each.

On Thursday, Dec. 7, Silver Bay faced off against Cromwell-Wright, among the best shooting teams in Minnesota in all classes last season. The Mariners fell 46-35, but the fact that the game was competitive at all was a victory for Silver Bay.

"We knew going into the game that we were playing a very good team," Johnson said. "We knew they would get their shots but we were only going to give them one. We rebounded extremely well and everyone played hard and kept working on defense."

Russell led the team with 16 points and DeQuevedo added six. Other scorers included Dequevedo with six points, Littlewolf with five, Walweski with four and Mita Frericks and Hannah Thums with two each.

Silver Bay (3-3) will play McGregor at 4:45 p.m. Friday Dec. 15, in McGregor.
