Baseball sectionals: Silver Bay downs Cherry, loses to South Ridge
Silver Bay made quick work of Cherry in 11-1, five inning victory over Cherry in the opening round of the Section 7A tournament, then lost 3-1 in a rain-shortened game to South Ridge on Tuesday, May 29, in Esko.
Mariner senior Jason Blood pitched all five innings and allowed just one unearned run in the third inning. Blood was sharp throughout the game, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Silver Bay senior Jake Bilben drove in Lucas Stadler in the top of the first inning. Stadler scored again in the third inning on a throwing error by Cherry.
After Cherry got one of the two runs back in the bottom of the third, Blood drove in Jared DeHart and kicked off a six-run fourth inning. The Mariners never looked back.
Stadler scored his third run on a wild pitch and in DeHart's second at-bat of the inning, he had a two-RBI single to finish the scoring for the Mariners in the fourth.
Silver Bay added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to end the game early.
In the second game of the day, South Ridge edged Silver Bay 3-1 in a game shortened to five innings by rain. Riley Tiboni pitched over 2 2/3 innings, but a two-run home run by Joey Janke in the bottom of the fourth inning put the Panthers up for good.
After the Mariners' at bat in the fifth inning, rain started falling again and the game was called early.
Silver Bay was scheduled to play Northeast Range on Thursday, May 31, in Cohasset.
