Two Harbors freshman Brjen Jones pitched a complete game and hit a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, but the Carlton scored another run in the bottom half of the inning to down the Agates 4-3 on Wednesday, May 15.
Two Harbors plated a run in the first inning, but the team had trouble getting hits against Bulldog junior ace Ryan Gray. Gray didn't get the win, but he allowed just four hits and struck out 11 in the game.
Gray held the Agates in check over the next five innings while the Bulldogs were able to manufacture runs a pair of runs with some well-timed hits and some fielding miscues by Two Harbors.
After Jones tied the game in the top of the seventh, Carlton loaded the bases and sophomore Dan Eggert hit a walk-off single to win the game.
As a result of the miscues, Jones allowed just one earned run on nine hits and struck out three batters.
"With the young club that we have, we can't afford to make errors because we can't sit around for two- or three-run doubles or even a homerun for that matter," Two Harbors coach Jeff Adams said. "We have to play crisp defense, we have to throw strikes and we need timely hitting."
The Bulldogs scored a third run scored on a wild pitch by Jones, but the freshman rebounded from the mistake to tie the game with a drive into centerfield that tied the game at three.
Jones has been thrust into a larger role than originally expected at the start of the season after senior pitcher Brett Olson was lost for the season early in the year with a torn labrum.
"We've had to count on Brjen a lot this year with Brett," Adams said. "Brjen's given us the chance to win ball games. He's a competitor and he wants the ball and he's our guy right now."
Two Harbors (2-8) is next scheduled to host Esko at 2:15 p.m. Monday, May 20.
