Silver Bay senior Callie Klemmer had a pair of hits in the Mariners' season opener Friday, April 5 against Esko, but the Mariners fell 11-1 in five innings.
Klemmer was also solid on the mound against a loaded Eskomo lineup with four players that had at least two hits in the game. Klemmer pitched four innings, allowing six runs and striking out one.
Young players dominated from both the mound and at the plate for Esko, with sophomore pitcher Miranda Kelley allowing just one run over five innings and striking out four batters, while fellow sophomore Zoie Johnson was 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
In addition, freshman catcher Jayden Karppinen went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Esko.
The Eskomos looked to end the game after just 4.5 innings, but Silver Bay junior Maureen Dwyer scored on a hit by senior Jessie Ketola in the top of the fifth forcing Esko to bat in the bottom half of the inning.
Esko scored its 11th run quickly in the bottom of the fifth to close out the game and secure their first win of the season.
Klemmer was the only Mariner with multiple hits in the game, though the team had several hard hit balls that didn't drop for hits.
Silver Bay (0-1) is scheduled to play Ely at home at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 15.
