The Silver Bay girls basketball team's season came to an end with a 36-35 loss to Wrenshall in the first round of the Section 7A tournament Monday, Feb. 25, in Two Harbors.
Both teams struggled to score early, combining for just 28 points in the first half and Silver Bay trailing 15-13.
Silver Bay's offense was more effective in the second half, but the team was just 5-of-10 from the free-throw line and fell just a point short of forcing overtime.
Junior Corrina Marolt scored 10 points to lead the Mariners and Lily Lewis had six.
Silver Bay entered the game having lost three of its last four games and with its best defensive player limited because of injury.
Senior Alexxa DeQuevedo, who was named to the All-Polar League, averaged nearly six steals a game this season for the Mariners, but an ankle injury against Northeast Range took her out of the final four games of the regular season.
DeQuevedo, who was named to the All-Polar League second team this week, played against Wrenshall, but was limited to just four points.
Silver Bay (5-17) took a step back this season after collecting 13 wins for the first time in more than a decade in 2017-18. However, the Mariners lost their leading scorer in Jocelyn Russell, starting point guard Jenny Walewski and sharpshooter Mita Frericks from last year's squad.
There is hope for the future, however. Silver Bay will lose just two seniors in DeQuevedo and Littlewolf. Even better, freshman Hannah Thums began to assert herself around the basket and eighth-grader Danika Thompson getting more and more playing time as the season went on.
The team will have plenty of senior leadership as well with Marolt and Lewis leading a group of five juniors back for the 2019-20 season.
