Silver Bay's season came to an end in an 8-3 loss to South Ridge in the Section 7A tournament Thursday, May 31, in Cloquet after rain caused the finish to be delayed two days.
When the game started May 29, pitcher Cora Carter was throwing her third game of the day and allowed eight runs over the first five innings, before the game was stopped for rain.
When the game picked up two days later, Silver Bay loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but could only push two runs across the plate before the Panthers got the third out to end the game.
Silver Bay had one of its best seasons in the last few years and had a chance at the section crown, but a late loss to Ely caused them to drop to the third seed in the subsection and made the road to the title game tougher. The loss forced the Mariners to play eventual section champion Carlton in the second game of the tournament.
Carlton beat South Ridge 12-7 in the championship game following the Panthers' win over Silver Bay.
Silver Bay still has a lot of hitting power on its roster for 2019, but will need to replace both its pitchers after the graduation of Carter and Everly Bauck. If they do find some strong pitching, there is enough offense on the roster to allow them to again challenge Carlton and Cherry for the Section 7A title.
