Bayside Chatter: Mariners hand out end of season awards
The end of the season awards for Mariner softball team were announced.
The MVP is Brooke McMillen and Cora Carter. The best offensive player is Jocelyn Russell and the best defensive player is Everly Bauck. Megan Maxey was named the most improved player and Callie Klemmer was rookie of the year.
McMillen at .460, Carter at .415 and Russell at .400 had the top three batting averages. McMillen had the most hits with 40 followed by Carter with 34 and Russell with 32. Carter led with 10 doubles, McMillen with three triples and Carter with three home runs. Carter had the most RBIs with 37 followed by Jessie Ketola with 30. The top slugging percentage came from McMillen at .701 with Carter at .695. McMillen scored the most runs at 39 followed by Russell with 31. Carter finished with 12 wins and Bauck had four. Carter had an ERA of 3.05 with 72 strikeouts and Bauck was 3.50 with 33 strikeouts. Russell led the team with 15 stolen bases.
Bauck will replace McMillen in the Polar League All Star softball game which will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Wade Fields.
The Mariners lose Brooke McMillen, Kayla Klofstad and Sylvia Davey to graduation.
The baseball team announced their season end awards at a team banquet at the Galley on June 7. They were voted on by the players and coaches. Rookie of the year went to Mason Ollman. Defensive player of the year was Nick Perfetto. Most inspirational teammate went to Tanner Ketola. Most improved player was Chase Jasperson. Top offensive player was Ero Wallin. MVP was Nick Perfetto.
Year end stats had Perfetto with the top batting average at .402 followed by Ero Wallin at .397 and Jason Blood at .318. Perfetto had the most hits with 31 followed by Wallin with 29 and Blood with 21. Perfetto had the most home runs at four, Jasperson the most triples with two and Wallin the most doubles with six. Wallin led the team with 27 RBIs followed by Blood and Ketola with 16 each. Blood and Ketola led the team with 16 walks each and Blood had the most stolen bases at eight followed by Ketola with seven.
Perfetto led the team with six pitching victories. Blood had two and Jared DeHart, Ketola and Hunter Monson each had one. Perfetto led the team with an ERA of 3.86 with 76 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings on the mound.
Tanner Ketola, Nick Perfetto, Hunter Monson and Ian Wallin will be lost to graduation.
Perfetto, Ero Wallin and Blood will play in the Polar League All Star baseball game at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Wade Stadium. Ward Wallin will be one of the coaches.
