Next week schools in Lake County and Duluth are off for winter break and my wife is taking the opportunity to make a trip to Tampa, Fla., with her sister and our niece.
Apparently, they are going to check out the Mermaid Show at Weeki Wachee Springs, among other plans. It was something they did with their parents when they were young, and they want our four-year-old niece to see it too.
If you don’t know what it is — I certainly had never heard of it. When you google it, you'll find women use breathing tubes from 1940s-era scuba gear to breath underwater.
The videos make me think, “Wait, this still happens? This isn’t from like the 60s, right?”
Our niece will love it, and I’m sure all three of them will enjoy some time away from gross, gray snow, biting wind and not checking their pockets to make sure they have gloves when they leave the house.
Believe me, I’m a little jealous. But I get a bachelor week in Duluth, and I’m going to do everything I can to make my wife jealous too.
No, not THAT kind of jealous.
Let’s call it culinary jealousy.
I’m going to eat all the things that make my wife jealous, and text her photos of it.
She leaves Tuesday, so Tuesday I think we’ll start with a Northern Waters Smokehaus sandwich. Maybe even one of her favorites instead of mine.
I think Wednesday calls for a Wise Yker at Ursa Minor Brewing. I’ve written about this before. It’s really, really good.
Thursday is a big day. I’m hoping to head up to Silver Bay for a game and I know exactly what will make her the most jealous. Pie at Rustic Inn. Maybe two pieces. Because that’s how jealous I am that she's getting away from the snow.
She comes back Friday evening, but I think that calls for sushi. Like good sushi, not just grocery store sushi. Duluth’s Hanabi is probably the go-to call here. She’ll be so mad. We love sushi — I remember one time she said she would eat sushi all the time if we could afford it.
Speaking of “afford,” the one thing I haven’t factored in is cost.
If I don’t watch, my little culinary jealousy tour will be more expensive than her flight to Tampa.
That might be a little hard to explain.
