Mildred Irene Pepin, age 96, passed away at home on October 5, 2019. She was born on May 4, 1923 on the family farm in Two Harbors, Minnesota to Albert and Irene Oling. Millie is survived by her daughter Barbara Pepin Granfors and son in law Mike Granfors, granddaughters Michelle (Granfors) Sobotka and her husband Ian Sobotka, and Maija Granfors along with many nieces and nephews. Millie was preceded in death by her siblings Wilbur Oling, Bert Oling, Pearl Oling, twins Mabel Hoseth and Viola Ryan, and Waldemar Oling.
She attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse in Knife River Valley and graduated from Two Harbors High School. Millie was a caretaker and provided care for an elderly woman in Two Harbors, provided care for her own parents until their death, and provided care for her grandchildren as they grew up. She also worked at Oscar’s lunch and North Shore Room in Two Harbors, Minnesota.
Millie moved to San Jose, California in 1985 at the age of 62. She loved to dance and sing around the piano at her apartment at Life’s Garden in Sunnyvale, Ca. She took Arthur Murray dance lessons and walked wherever she went. She was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church of Cupertino for many years.
Millie moved in with her daughter and her husband in 2011 as she was developing Alzheimer’s Dementia. She continued to walk, including daily walks until her early 90s, walking at least 1.5 miles per day.
Services and burial were held on October 10th at the Alta Mesa Funeral Home in Palo Alto, Ca. She will be remembered for her perseverance, resilience, dedication, and devotion.
