Mildred Evelyn Westin Gustafson

Mildred Evelyn Westin Gustafson, age 95, resident of St. Clare's Living Community in Mora, MN went home to be with her Lord on Friday, March 1, 2019.

Mildred was born in Ely, Minnesota, on July 4, 1923, to Elmer and Amy (Johnson) Korpi. She attended the Elbow Lake School, Sandstone High School, and earned a teaching certificate at the Hinckley Teacher Training Department in 1942. She taught at the Wesser School in Hinckley and then moved to Minneapolis where she did secretarial work.

On November 21, 1944, she was united in marriage to Lennard E. Westin in Minneapolis. As a young couple they lived in Jacksonville, Florida until Lennard's discharge from the Naval Reserves on September 29, 1945. Over the years they resided in several places: Sandstone, Finland, Mountain Iron, Monett (MO), Forest Lake, and then Moose Lake where Lennard passed away on September 1, 1988. Mildred continued to work at Hillside Manor West apartments where she and Lennard had been caretakers. On October 5, 1991, she married Wayne Gustafson. They lived in Moose Lake, Finlayson, and Mora.

Mildred had a strong, enduring faith in God and loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a wonderful homemaker and an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed going for walks, camping, swimming with her grandchildren, and spending winters in Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lennard, siblings Arlene, Irwin, Arnold, Judy and Wesley, and daughter-in-law Linda Westin (wife of her son Ken).

Mildred is survived by her husband Wayne Gustafson, her sons Ken Westin, Larry (Judy) Westin, Arlen (Deanna) Westin, and Darrell Westin; step-daughters Donna (Dean) Carroll, and Lezlie (Duane) Sundeen; 9 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Her memorial service will be held at the St. John's Free Lutheran Church in Finlayson, MN at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30th. Visitation will begin an hour before the service.
