Joyce Elizabeth Helin, age 76, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at her home at River Grand Senior Living. Joyce was born in 1942 to William and Margaret Helin at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, MN where her mother was teaching nursing. When her mother died when Joyce was three years old, she lived mainly with her grandparents, the Chesters, in Eveleth, MN. Her father met Mrs. Ina Fisk in Duluth and when they married, Joyce gained a stepmother and a little sister, Kathy. Later Mr. & Mrs. Helin added another sister, Sandy, and a brother, Bill.
Joyce graduated from Grand Rapids High School and St. Luke's College to become a wonderful, caring RN. She worked in many cities from the east coast to the west coast. Her most exciting job was in California in a children's oncology unit. When she retired from Deer River Hospital, she moved to Two Harbors where she lived happily until she became too ill to live on her own. She moved to Grand Rapids to be closer to her sister Kathy. She lived in Grand Rapids the rest of her days. Joyce was loved by many friends and family. She was loving, joyful, loved the outdoors, and taking pictures. She had the voice of an angel. Joyce will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Preceded in death by her parents, Joyce is survived by her son, Charlie (Andrea) Henrickson; sisters, Kathy (Gerald) Lussier and Sandy Helin; brother, Bill (Mary) Helin; and two grandchildren, Siri and Axel. Visitation will be Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 10:00 AM followed by the 11:00 AM Memorial Service at Community Presbyterian Church, Grand Rapids, MN. Pastor Kimbrel Johnson will officiate.
