A man was seriously injured after being hit by a car after his vehicle went into a ditch early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 5:19 a.m. at U.S. Highway 53 and Murphy Lake Road in Heikkala Lake, Minn., north of Cotton. According to Minnesota State Patrol, a 23-year-old Two Harbors man was driving south on Highway 53 when his 2000 Ford Ranger went into the median ditch.

The man was able to get out of his vehicle and tried to wave down a passing plow truck. When the plow truck passed, the man fell down in the road and was struck by a Chevrolet Impala, according to police. The driver and passenger in the Impala were not injured.

The driver of the Ford Ranger was transported to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in fair condition as of Tuesday evening. A passenger in the Ford Ranger, a 23-year-old woman, also of Two Harbors, was not injured.

Roads at the time of the incident were described by authorities as snow and ice covered. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
