The William Kelley High School marching band was one of two recipients of the Butch Dufault Spirit Award from the Minnesota State Fair High School Marching Band Competition.
According to a letter from Theresa Weinfurtner, entertainment manager of the state fair, The Butch Dufault Spirit Award was "created to be awarded to one band every year during the Minnesota State Fair Marching Band Competition who best exemplifies the pride, spirit, enthusiasm, friendliness and unity desired of all high school band participants."
The award is named in honor of Butch Dufault, who served as a judge for more than 20 years as part of the competition. Usually, the award is presented to only one band; however, due to continuous rain, the election judges decided to make an exception.
The William Kelley Marching Band performed Aug. 26 despite rain. They were one of two schools to march during the parade that day.
"The weather can be so unpredictable and we do everything in our power to not cancel the parade unless it's a safety issue," wrote Weinfurtner in the letter. "I cannot thank you enough for your patience and understanding of the entire situation. Thanks for sticking it out and marching!"
East Central and Willow River marching band will also receive the award and stipend.
