2 injured in motorcycle crash near Toimi

A Silver Bay couple were hospitalized after a motorcycle collision with a deer Sunday, July 1, near Toimi.

Tyler Wells Thompson and his wife, Kristi Jo Thompson, both 43, were traveling east toward Silver Bay alongside a second motorcycle on Forest Highway 11 near Grondahl Road around 1 a.m. when a deer jumped their path. While one motorcycle managed to steer clear of the deer, Tyler — the driver of the Thompsons' bike — was unable to avoid a collision.

Kristi was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered serious injuries. She was transported by helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth and remains hospitalized. A status update was not available.

The Thompsons' motorcycle slid after the crash and Tyler, who was also thrown away from the bike, suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to St. Luke's. He was not listed as a patient there Tuesday morning.

Alcohol, drugs or other "contributing factors" do not appear to be factors in the crash, Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson told the News-Chronicle.
