In one of what he says is the “few pleasures” of his job as mayor, Scott Johnson swore in a new Silver Bay police officer, Nick O’Toole, during the City Council meeting Monday, Sept. 17.

O’Toole, a native of Coleraine, Minn., graduated from Greenway High School and completed his law enforcement degree at Vermilion Community College in Ely and his skills training at Hibbing Community College.

Since finishing his skills training, O’Toole has worked in part-time and full-time temporary positions in the Coleraine, Bovey and Nashwauk police departments for the past eight months.

“There were a lot of qualities that we wanted and we found those in Nick,” Silver Bay Police Chief Doug Frericks said. “He comes to us with some experience and he’s worked as a part-time officer, but he’s working 40 hours a week and he’s working for three different agencies, so he’s made a huge commitment to the profession and that was a huge selling point … I felt and we felt that Nick would be a great fit for out department.”
