This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
Two Harbors Public Library
Each summer, the Two Harbors Public Library selects a community organization to partner with. This year, it chose to partner with the Friends of the Band Shell Park, who is actively fundraising for a new Performing Arts Center.
Throughout the summer, children read to earn either prizes or tokens. For each 100 minutes read, a child earned either an incentive prize, like a sticker, pencil or notepad, or could choose to donate a reading token toward the summer fundraiser.
Each reading token was worth 25 cents. The Friends of the Two Harbors Public Library agreed to write a check to cover the full amount raised.
This summer, participating children read a total of 128,500 minutes, which is equivalent to nearly 2,142 hours. Of this amount, children chose to donate 239 reading tokens, a total of 23,900 minutes of their time, raising $59.75 for the Performing Arts Center.
When combined with cash donations from adults throughout the summer, the library raised a total of $104.16 for the Friends of the Band Shell Park to apply toward their new Performing Arts Center.
