The Two Harbors Municipal Liquor Store is participating in a food drive throughout October in association with the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association and Coors Lite. The drive is also a competition among other municipal liquor stores to donate the most pounds of food.

"If we are the top-earning store in the state, (get receive) an additional $1,000 donation for our local Two Harbors food shelf," liquor store manager Dave Ellquist said. "And there are five other random $100 donations if we don't quite make the top store."

The store is taking donations of nonperishable food through Oct. 31. Cash donations are also acceptable. Every dollar equates to 3 pounds of food.

Wishlist items include:

  • Canned fruits and vegetables;
  • All canned beans;
  • Canned meats;
  • Canned condiments such as salsa, pickles and relish;
  • Soups, pasta and pasta sauce;
  • Peanut butter;
  • Brown rice;
  • Diapers;
  • Health and hygiene products.

The store is also planning a "stuff-the-truck"-style donation day later in the month, but didn't have a confirmed date as of press time. At the end of October, the donated food and cash will be totaled and given to the Two Harbors Area Food Shelf.
