Two Harbors Library to host chess tourney Oct. 6

Two Harbors Public Library will host a chess tournament for players of all ages Oct. 6.

The library has hosted its monthly Chess Time for youth and adult players during the past year, featuring coaching by local chess enthusiast and County Commissioner Rich Sve.

This will be a non-rated tournament — just for enjoyment. Sve, who proposed the idea, will serve as tournament director. He will set up the brackets as a four-round Swiss-style tournament, possibly modified depending on the number of players.

The event is open to all players, with three classes: age 15 and younger; age 16 and up, novice; and age 16 and up, experienced players. There will be prizes awarded from 3:30-4 p.m. for each class.

Sign-in will be at 9:30 a.m., with the first round of play starting at 10 a.m.The library will open at 11 a.m. as usual, but there will access to the meeting room for the start of the tournament.

There will be two rounds of play before the lunch break and two after. Players will not use a clock, but games not completed by the time of the next round will be “adjourned” with the positions noted and will be completed after the last round.
