Northshore Mining Co. in Silver Bay is sponsoring a free drop-off Tuesday for local residents to properly dispose of devices that contain toxic mercury.

The event is set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John's Sanitary, 15 Golf Course Dr. in Silver Bay.

Items suitable for drop-off include fluorescent bulbs, tilt switches, mercury thermometers and gas range pilot safety shutoffs. Electronic waste such as computers, towers, printers, stereos (but not speakers) cellular phones, computer monitors and TVs (up to 2 per person), circuit boards and microwaves also can be dropped off free of charge.
