TOFTE -- Firefighters from much of the North Shore spent hours fighting a stubborn fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon at one of the region's premiere resorts. Four units were severely damaged and one sustained water damage at Bluefin Bay, general manager and owner Dennis Rysdahl said. Bluefin Bay is located along the Lake Superior shore about 80 miles northeast of Duluth. The fire, which started at about noon, was out and the last firefighters were pulling away at 8 p.m., Rysdahl said. "Now we just have to do the cleanup," he said.

A partnership among a high school, a hospital and a nursing home hopes to provide careers for high school graduates while filling a need in Two Harbors. A class for current high school students and graduates that begins Feb. 11 will prepare students for state nursing assistant certification, a news release from Lake View Hospital said. The hospital is joining Two Harbors High School and Ecumen Scenic Shores nursing home in presenting the course. It will take place on Saturdays and after school hours, making it available for current students.

A Two Harbors couple's child foster care license was revoked because the foster mother spanked a foster child in violation of state rules, according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Kirk and Beth Schield were issued a license to care for up to four foster children in their home on Dec. 1, 2010. The revocation was announced in a letter to the Schields dated July 6 and was posted on Tuesday on the department's website.
Women facing breast cancer will get a little extra warmth and comfort thanks to a donation from local artists to the Essentia Health Cancer Center in Duluth. The 30 quilts were made in conjunction with the Spring Fling Quilt Show, an Essentia Health news release said. The event is coordinated by four shops: Behind the Seams in Silver Bay, Country Schoolhouse in Superior, Creations in Duluth and Quilt Corner in Beaver Bay.
The Junior League of Duluth has awarded a $1,250 grant to Just Kids Dental, a Two Harbors-based nonprofit that provides dental care to underserved children. The 2011-12 school year saw a record number of children requiring dental services, said Stacey Anderson, executive director of Just Kids Dental, in a news release.
