Spruce budworm larvae feed on needles in late summer and attack buds in spring. Lake County is in the midst of an outbreak projected to last through 2022. The outbreak sparked landowners to sign up for a Lake Soil & Water Conservation District forestry pilot project that includes clearing thick stands of dead spruce and balsam trees.
