Four Two Harbors-Silver Bay swimmers are headed to state this weekend after qualifying at sectionals Saturday, Nov. 11.

Senior Katarina Hanson and sophomores Kate Thomasen, Kaylee Overby and Riley Larson qualified for the state meet during the Section 7A meet. The four of them qualified as a relay team and Thomasen, Overby and Larson qualified in individual events.

The relay team took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.76. Overby took second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.26 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.98. Larson also took second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:39.21.

Though the top two finishers from each event move on to state, swimmers can qualify for state if they meet or beat the state qualifying time, and one Agate swimmer did just that. Thomasen took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.62, just beating the state qualifying time of 54.97.

Other top finishers at sectionals who missed out on going to state by mere seconds included: Larson taking third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.95; Thomasen taking third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.02 seconds; and the relay team taking third in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:46.85.

The Agates team placed fourth in the meet, with Hibbing taking first, Mesabi East in second and Duluth Denfeld in third.
