Hockey: Storm boys fall short against North Branch

The North Shore Storm boys fell to the North Branch Vikings 3-2 on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Lake County Arena in Two Harbors.

The game was fairly evenly match throughout all three periods. North Branch started off the scoring with a goal from Braady Meyer at 4:45 in the first, but not three minutes later, North Shore's Chad Nordean scored a power play goal with an assist from Logan Loiselle to tie it up at 1-1. The Vikings were able to get one last goal in in the first period ending the first 17 minutes with a 2-1 lead.

"We just got off to a bad start. North Branch is a good team, so we're not disappointed with the end result," head coach Mike Guzzo said.

Only one goal was scored in the second and third periods. North Branch took a 3-1 lead in the second with a goal from Jacob Richards on an assist from Cody Moline. The Storm came in with one in the third after a goal from the point by Loiselle with an assist from Nordean at 3:58. Unfortunately, the Storm weren't able to tie it up in the end after the Vikings were penalized for too many players on the ice with just 2:07 left in the game.

"We got our goaltender pulled and we took some nice point-blank shots, but we just weren't able to cash in," Guzzo said. "We were banging away right to the last buzzer, so it was pretty entertaining for the fans."

The Storm take on the Vikings again Saturday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. at Chisago Lake Arena in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Guzzo said if the boys can get off to a faster start, they should come away with a win this time.

"In any sport you play, if you have to play catch-up, that's always tougher," he said. "We would like to start getting the lead in some of these games."

To take the lead in games, Guzzo said the team needs its top players to start scoring more regularly.

"I believe that if we can get 30-plus shots on net per game, we'll start scoring more than three goals a game," he said. "We would like to be up to five goals per game if we can."

Cameron Roy was in net for the Storm with 27 saves.
