Bayside Chatter: North Shore youth teams do well in tourneys
The three North Shore Storm youth teams that advanced to regional play all won at least one game in their tournament. All three entered regional play as the number three seed from District 11.
The Bantam B team went 2-2 in regional play at Two Harbors. They opened play with a 4-3 win over Eveleth-Gilbert, the number one seed from the Range. After losing 5-2 to Bemidji, they advanced with a 3-2 overtime win over Grand Rapids. They were eliminated by Lake of the Woods 3-2 in double overtime. Bemidji and Lake of the Woods advanced to the state tournament.
In Bantam A action at Silver Bay, the Storm opened play with a 7-1 loss to Greenway. They rebounded with a 4-3 overtime victory over Duluth Denfeld. Duluth East beat them 6-1 in an elimination game. East and Greenway advanced to the state tournament.
At Warroad the 12U B girls opened with a 7-0 loss to Hibbing. They came back with a 7-0 win of their own over Thief River Falls. The Storm were eliminated from play with a 5-2 loss to Moose Lake. Hibbing and Cloquet moved on to state.
With the conclusion of another hockey season in Lake County, it is now awards season.
At the girls season ending hockey banquet Hannah Johnson was named winner of the Character Award and was the winner of the Hobey Baker Award. The Coaches Award went Everly Bauck and the Points Award to Brooke McMillen. The Storm Award went to Steven Gow. Hannah Johnson and Brooke McMillen were each named All-Academic All-State.
At the boys banquet, Austin Jones received the Broken Hurdle Award as the junior varsity's top player in hustle and dedication. The top scorer and MVP was Tanner Ketola. The top offensive player was Chad Nordean and the top defensive player was Logan Loiselle. Rookie of the year was Mason Meyer and the most improved player was Nick Hendrickson. The award for hardest worker and most determined player went to Giovanni Marolt. These awards were all voted on by the players. they also selected next seasons captains in Chad Nordean, Logan Loiselle and Giovanni Marolt. Named winner of the Hobey Baker Award was Nick Perfetto.
Chad Nordean and Tanner Ketola were both selected to play in the St. Luke's All-Star hockey game. The game will be held on March 14 at Amsoil Arena.
Winners of the 14th annual 3-on-3 Rink Rat tournament were Jake Swanson, Nate Swanson and Thomas Rowlee. Top goalie was Kyle Ekstrom.
The Silver defeated the Black 7-0 and 6-3 for the championship of the 21st annual Silver Cup. Members of the winning team were Jake Bilben, Jared Conboy, Dustin Goutermont, Shane Hoff, Zach Harrison, Tanner Ketola, David Klemmer, Logan Loiselle, Jessup Pelkey, Jake Swanson, Nate Swanson, Gordon Thorne, Sully Tikkanen, Shane Torgersen and Peyton Westerlund. The top goalie was Connor Sullivan.
