Bayside Chatter: Storm boys wrap up regular season
The North Shore Storm boys suffered another tough loss to a section 7A opponent in their final regular season game when they fell 3-2 to the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears at Two Harbors.
Eveleth-Gilbert's Aaron Koivunen scored the game winning goal with 53 seconds left to play while on a 4-on-3 power play.
Eveleth-Gilbert took a 1-0 lead on a Cooper Dosan goal 2:46 into the game. Tanner Ketola tied it up for the Storm at 5:02. After Gavin Maki put the Bears up by one again, Ethan Sporn tied it up once more with assists from Jake Swanson and Ketola at 9:01 of the first. Then there was no more scoring until the final minute of play.
Tyler Keech finished with 19 saves for the Storm, which included stopping two breakaways in the second period. Ashton Sandnas had 34 stops for Eveleth.
The Storm received the number six seed out of 10 teams in Section 7A. The seeds from top to bottom are Hermantown, Hibbing, Greenway, Virginia, Eveleth-Gilbert, North Shore, International Falls, Denfeld, Proctor and Ely. The Storm played the Greenway Raiders at Coleraine Thursday night too late for the News-Chronicle's deadline. The winner of that contest plays at Amsoil Arena Saturday at 8 p.m. against either International Falls or Hibbing-Chisholm.
Brooke McMillen and Everly Bauck were each selected to play in the K1 Girls All-Star Game, which will be held on Feb. 28 in Cloquet. Prior to that game there will be the Futures Game which will have Jessie Ketola, Gracie Komarek and Olivia Kempfert from the Storm as participants.
Three North Shore Storm youth teams took third in their respective District 11 tournament and qualified for the region tournament. The Bantam A team took third at Silver Bay and advances to the North Region in Silver Bay. The Bantam B team took third in Two Harbors and advances to the North Region in Two Harbors. The 12U B girls took third place in Moose Lake and advances to the Olympic Region in Warroad.
The annual 3-on-3 Rink Rat tournament is scheduled for Feb. 28 at Rukavina Arena and the Silver Cup is scheduled for March 2 and March 7. These dates aren't positively set in concrete so keep checking with the arena office.
UPDATE: The North Shore Storm boys lost to Greenway 5-3 Thursday night ending their season. The Storm got off to a strong start getting the first goal of the game just 4:27 into the first period by Jake Swanson. Greenway reponded with five goals, two in the first and three in the second, before the Storm lit the lamp again. Easton Best and Chad Nordean had the final two goals of the game in the third period.
