The North Shore Storm girls’ 12U B hockey team won the North Region at Roseau and advanced to the state tournament to be held March 14-16 at the Maple Grove Community Center. The team will open up play against Eagan who was ranked No.10 in the last state poll.


As District 11 champions, the girls had a first bye at Roseau. They then defeated Moose Lake 5-3 in the semi-final contest. In the finals they made short work of Brainerd, cruising to a 7-0 victory and a state berth. The team enters state play with a record of 27-8-1 after winning just four games last season.


Anna Carman skated with the Section 7 team at the Senior Classic last weekend. Section 7 took third place in the event, with their only loss coming to eventual champion section 6 in overtime. Anna was named to the Class A All-state, All-academic team.


Luke Small has accepted an offer to play hockey next season at Bethel College.

The boys’ state high school hockey tournament began on Monday. Hermantown defeated Duluth Marshall 6-2 to represent Section 7A and Duluth East beat Elk River 3-2 in overtime to represent 7AA.Hermantown got a No.2 seed at state behind East Grand Forks and opened play against undefeated Luverne. East got a No.4 seed behind Edina, Lakeville North and Eden Prairie. Class A saw seven No.1 seeds and a two seed advance to state. In AA there were four No.1 seeds, one- two seed, two-three seeds and a four seed advancing.


The team of Nate Breden, Cory Nelson and Micah Taintor took first place in the 11th annual Rink Rat tournament. Casey Geissler was the top goalie. Second place went to the team of Jared Conboy, Gordon Thorne and Nate Bauck.


Preliminary mock drafts have the Vikings picking either Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley, Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles or Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with their first pick this May.
