Sports Roundup: Skiers place at state run

Two Harbors Nordic skiing

Kiersten Haaversen, a sophomore Nordic skier for the Two Harbors team, finished 93rd at the State Meet Thursday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Head coach Sara Byrns said Haaversen moved up 12 places during the classic pursuit race.  

"It was a fun day and a great experience for Haaversen," Byrns said.

She finished with a time of 38:11.5 (her combined freestyle and classic race times). The event was a pursuit race where skiers combine scores between freestyle and classic races.

In order to get to state, Haaversen finished 13th at sections a few weeks ago after climbing out of a big hole. Haaversen was the only team member to qualify for state this year.

Those who will be graduating this year include captains Aaron Holbeck and Anna Schield. The team was coached by Sara Byrns and Rachel Howard.

Silver Bay Nordic skiing

Sophomores Kieran Scannell and Shelby Ahrendt, both of Cook County, competed at the state Nordic ski meet Thursday at Giants Ridge for the Silver Bay/Cook County team.

Scannell finished 40th with a time of 31:56 on the boys side while Ahrendt finished 111th with a time of 40:58.3 for the girls. The event was in a pursuit format with scores being combined from freestyle and classic races.

Ninth-grader Hank Bemlott of Silver Bay was a member of the team. Mark Summers of Cook County coached the team.

Silver Bay Alpine skiing

The Silver Bay/Cook County Alpine ski team had three competitors at the State Meet last Wednesday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Junior Katie Smedstad and senior Ali Boettcher, both of Silver Bay, finished in 37th and 59th place. Smedstad finished with a time of 1:21.81 while Boettcher came in at 1:25.26. Molly Rider of Cook County placed 80th with a time of 2:04.71.

Other members from the team included seventh-grader Haley Yoki and sophomore Dexter Yoki, both of Silver Bay.

The team was coached by Jim Vick.

Silver Bay-Two Harbors hockey

The Silver Bay hockey team scored four unanswered goals after Two Harbors had come back to tie the game at two Tuesday as the Mariners skated away with a 6-2 win in the Section 7A play-in game at Rukavina Arena.

Warren Carter led the Mariners offense with two goals and an assist and Shane Billings and Sean Graden each added a goal and an assist.

Carter and Graden scored goals to make it 2-0 Mariners after one. The Agates came out and promptly tied it up in period two.

Tyler McGregor cut it to 2-1 with the aid of Alex Buckman and Alex Anderson tied it at two with an assist from Ben Ruberg on an Agates power play. One minute later, Billings scored with an assist from Cody Larson to give the Mariners the lead for good. Before the period ended the Mariners hit three pipes and were robbed by Agates goalie Micky Smith on a number of occasions.

One minute into the final period of play Brad Rowlee made it 4-2 on a power play set up by Carter and Larson. Late in the period Carter struck again to make it 5-2 and Thomas Jensen concluded the scoring with an empty-net goal with 41 seconds left on the clock.

Kody Waldron stopped four of the six shots he faced before being replaced by Smith, who ended up with 37 saves. Alex Murray picked up the win in the Mariners net with 24 saves.

The Mariners advanced to the section quarterfinals to face Hibbing Thursday.

The game also ended the Agates season. They finished with a record of 3-23. Among those graduating include forwards Ben Ruberg and Paul Sonday and defender Drew Fleck. 

Two Harbors head coach Steve Wasko is optimistic about next season.

"We have some young kids that are hungry and want to be successful," he said. Wasko said some of the team's goals in the offseason is doing a better job of getting into the weight room and playing other sports.

Silver Bay girls basketball

The Silver Bay girls basketball team won at Fond du Lac Ojibwe 71-34 Thursday.

The Mariners had a solid first half, outscoring Fond du Lac by 13. The Mariners had an even better second half outscoring Fond du Lac by 24.

Alicia Nopola led Silver Bay, pouring in 28 points. Leigh Lampton had 11 points while Allana Lampton and Tara Dow each scored nine.

The Mariners lost at home to Barnum Friday 78-18.

Nopola had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Mariners lost at Ely Tuesday, 88-12. Tara Dow and Ashley Mazzeo both scored four points in the loss.

The Mariners last regular season game was Thursday against Tower-Soudan. The Mariners begin playoffs Tuesday.

Silver Bay boys basketball

The Silver Bay boys basketball team lost at home to Barnum Friday in a close one, 48-45.

The Mariners held a seven-point lead out of the first half, but the Bombers stormed back in the second, outscoring Silver Bay by 10.

Kyle Blood drilled three 3-pointers for the Mariners for 20 points while Luke Thun scored 18.

The Mariners lost at Ely Tuesday 75-60.

The Mariners will be at Mesabi Academy at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Two Harbors hockey

The Two Harbors hockey team lost at Moose Lake 9-3 Thursday in its regular season finale.

It was all Moose Lake in the first period as they outscored the Agates 6-0. The Agates did manage to trade goals back and forth in the second to tie the period 3-3. Austyn Wasko scored two goals in the period including one on a power play and Ben Ruberg also scored on a power play.

Micky Smith had 21 saves for Two Harbors and Kody Waldron also contributed 15 saves in the Agates net.

Silver Bay hockey

The Silver Bay Mariners defeated the Ely Timberwolves 6-1 at home Thursday in their final regular season game. The Bay led 1-0 after one on a power play goal from Cody Larson, despite outshooting the Wolves 21-5 in the period. After the Timberwolves tied it 11 seconds into period two, Sean Graden put the Mariners ahead for good with a goal at 15:48. Goals from  Ryan DeShaw, Larson, Daniel Wilson, and Warren Carter in the final period concluded the game's scoring in favor of the Mariners 6-1 .

Two Harbors boys basketball

The Two Harbors boys basketball team lost at home Saturday, 70-51 to Cloquet.

The Agates won at Carlton Tuesday 68-51.

The Bulldogs held a three-point lead out of the first half. Two Harbors stormed out of the gates in the second half, winning that by 20.

Jon McDannold scored 23 points while Caleb Hamp-Sill had 16. Jake Iskat also scored 11 for Two Harbors.

The Agates will be at Eveleth-Gilbert at 7:30 p.m. today.
