Football: Agates rock Hunters
Two Harbors senior Spencer Ross ran for five touchdowns and 206 yards in the Agates 41-14 win Sept. 1 over Duluth Denfeld.
The Agate offense sputtered a bit in the first quarter and the defense gave up a few big plays to Hunter quarterback Montrelly McMillan early, but both squads were able to make adjustments and turn what initially looked like a close game into Two Harbors' second blowout victory of the season.
McMillan put the Agate defense in a tight spot early with runs of 72 and 17 yards to give the Hunters a first and goal from the Two Harbors 2 yard line. After an illegal procedure penalty moved the Denfeld back to the 7 yard line, senior Logan Loiselle intercepted a McMillan pass and set the Agate offense up deep in their own territory.
Two Harbors drove down the field to the Denfeld 31, but quarterback Ryan Darsow had his own pass picked off by Avionte Williams and set the Hunters up on their own 11 yard line.
Denfeld picked up a first down, but couldn't keep the momentum going and an 11 yard punt put Two Harbors' offense back on the field at the Hunter 29. The Agates handed off to Ross three times and he picked up 29 yards, including a five-yard touchdown run to put the Agates up 7-0 after the Darsow extra point with 11:55 to play in the second quarter.
Later in the quarter, McMillan scored on a 1 yard run to make the score 7-6, but Denfeld wouldn't find the endzone again until there was less than a minute to play in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Two Harbors returned the kick to the Denfeld 30 and Ross carried the ball in two plays later from 29 yards out.
Later in the half, the Agate defense pinned Denfeld deep and Nelson called a pair of timeouts to force the Hunters to punt from their own end zone instead of running out the clock. Darsow returned the ball to the Denfeld 14 and Ross ran the ball in on the next play to give Two Harbors a 20-6 lead at halftime.
Ross scored twice more in the third quarter and Joey Marker scored with 3:19 left to play in the game.
Tyrell Beckom scored for Denfeld with 59 seconds to play, but reserves were in the game for both Two Harbors and Denfeld.
Two Harbors (2-0) will play Esko at 7 p.m. today in Two Harbors.
