Bayside Chatter: Football powers get wins

The Mariners open the home portion of their football schedule at 7 p.m. tonight by hosting the Southridge Panthers, a merger of Albrook and Cotton. The Panthers fell 57-6 to the Northwoods Grizzlies in Cook. Jeff Kuhlman ran 10 yards for their only score after they fell behind 41-0. Last season the Mariners won 38-6 at Albrook and should be considered  the favorite.

The Mariners ran the ball 42 times for 278 yards at Babbitt and passed the ball three times with no completions. Two of three throws were deep and missed by inches from going to the house.

Holden Panetti led the offense with 159 yards rushing on 21 attempts. The Mariners limited the Nighthawk offense to 118 yards. They anticipate getting a few more healthy bodies for tonight's game, which give them a little break during the game.

Bigfork defeated Littlefork/Big falls and Mountain Iron-Buhl beat Cherry to give them front-runner and favorite status in the Big North Conference. Floodwood easily beat Northland and McGregor had no trouble with Hill City to keep on top in Section 5. and the Minnesota State High School League have come to an agreement on computer  rankings, whereby each sport now has the option of either a coach's vote for section seeding or using Minnesota-scores computer rankings.
