Basketball: Late run dooms Mariners

Silver Bay held the lead through most of its game against Cromwell-Wright, but a late scoring run by the Cardinals sealed the Mariners' fate in a 63-56 loss Thursday, Dec. 7, in Silver Bay.

Sophomore Riley Tiboni scored 15 points and senior Jason Blood had 15.

The Mariners led 34-28 halftime and grew to 15 points midway through the second half before the Cardinals put together a 25-3 run to close the game and give Silver Bay its first loss of the season.

Other scorers for the Mariners included Weston Monson with eight points, Mason Ollman and Zach Blood with six each, Jared DeHart with five and James Nopola with two.

The Mariners shot less than 32 percent in the game and committed 12 turnovers.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Mariners bounced back with a dominating 75-23 win over Northeast Range in Babbitt.

Monson led all scorers with 23 points and Ollman scored 15 for Silver Bay. Jason Blood recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds and added two assists and two steals to his statline.

Other scorers included Nopola with eight points, Tiboni with seven, Zach Blood with five and Jared DeHart with one point.

Silver Bay (2-1) will play McGregor at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, in McGregor.
