Girls basketball: Agates edge Ely

Body:

Two Harbors senior Carina Hebl scored 15 points to lead the Agates girls' basketball team to a 49-42 win over Ely on Saturday, Dec. 2, and a bounce-back win after a brutal 61-15 loss to Proctor the night before.

Against Proctor, the Agates shot just 7 percent from the floor and committed 18 turnovers in the first half alone. Hebl was the only Agate to hit a shot from the field and finished the game with seven points.

The Agates talked over their problems with taking care of the basketball at halftime. Coach Chris Lemke said they remained positive despite trailing 38-7 at the break.

The Agates came out in the second half and did take care of the ball better, committing only four turnovers in the remainder of the game. Two Harbors shooting, however, didn't improve in the second half and the team managed only eight points and just three field goals in the game.

"If we can keep it positive on the bench during that whole thing, there is nowhere to go but up," Lemke said. "When you go through something like that, it somehow in a weird way brings you closer. But you've got to totally give it to Proctor, They came out ready to play and they played exceptional defense."

Other scorers against Proctor included Tori Bott with five points, Emily Olson with two and Elsa Peterson with one.

Against Ely, the Agates did play better, committing only 10 turnovers in the game and increasing their shooting percentage to just over 35 percent.

Two Harbors led by 10 points at halftime, but the Timberwolves cut into the lead and continued to push the Agates late and cut the lead to two. Hebl responded, however, and hit six free throws and a big 3-pointer to close the game.

"They had some really chances to lose confidence against Ely. That first game was humiliating," Lemke said. "We talked about it, and about (how) learning to be humble is a positive thing. That's where character comes in and that's what I've loved about them. That's what's going to get them through a loss like that."

Two Harbors (1-1) will play Cook County at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at home.
