Boys basketball: Mariners throttle Cherry

Junior Weston Monson scored 23 points as the Silver Bay boys basketball team trounced and overmatched Cherry team 89-21 Monday, Dec. 4, in Silver Bay.

The Mariners offense was clicking all night long, shooting 48 percent from the field and jumping out to a 62-8 halftime lead over the Tigers.

Coach Terry Blood was pleased with the team's performance and a first-half shooting percentage that approached 60 percent.

"I loved the way they moved the ball and played together as a team," he said. "I didn't judge it on the score. I judge it on our ball movement and our rebounding. I don't know if we gave up a second

-chance shot."

Sophomore Mason Ollman recorded a double

-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jason Blood had 15 points and five assists in a game where the starters were spectators throughout the second half.

Coach Blood was also pleased with the play of the Mariner reserves and believes their performance will be key to continued success for Silver Bay this season.

"We used to get a bit of a drop in level when a couple new kids would come in, and tonight it didn't change at all," he said. "We can rotate in and we can keep our starters fresh and keep them strong."

Jared DeHart and James Nopola netted nine points each; Riley Tiboni had seven; Zach Blood scored three; Coby Olson had two; and Tanner Halvorson had one point.

Silver Bay (1-0) was scheduled to play Cromwell-Wright on Thursday, Dec. 7. Results weren't available by press time.

The Mariners play Northeast Range at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, in Babbitt.
