The Silver Bay girls basketball team picked up its first win this season with a 61-39 drubbing of Fond du Lac Ojibwe on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Cloquet.
Senior Jocelyn Russell had her best game of the season, recording a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds as well as five steals.
Mariner coach Dan Johnson said both teams struggled early shooting from the field, but Silver Bay improved as the half wore on and led 31-20 at the break.
"In the second half, we applied more full court pressure and got a few steals and really got them out of rhythm on their offense," Johnson said.
Point guard Jenny Walewski scored 11 points for the Mariners and established herself as a floor leader and controlled the tempo of the game, according to Johnson.
Joining Russell and Walewski in double figures was junior Alexxa DeQuevedo with 10 points. Other scorers against Fond du Lac included Lily Lewis with nine points; Amiah Mitchell with four; Mita Frericks with three; and Hannah Thums and Natalie Nelson with two each.
On Nov. 30 against Cook County, Silver Bay lost 43-39 in overtime with Walewski leading the Mariners with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
"We were up with about three minutes to go, but made some untimely turnovers, which they turned into points," Johnson said.
Silver Bay shot just 22 percent from the field, a big factor in Cook County's rally. Russell had 11 points and six rebounds in the game and DeQuevedo scored five. Other scorers included Thums with four and Julia Littlewolf and Lewis with two points each.
"We were able to get the shots we wanted, but our shooting percentage played a huge factor in our loss," Johnson said. We expect to be in many close games this year, which means we need to learn how to handle the extra pressure."
Silver Bay (1-2) was scheduled to play Cromwell-Wright on Thursday, Dec, 7. Results weren't available by press time.
They will play Duluth Denfeld at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, in Duluth.
