Sports roundup: Jan. 10

With a slew of postponed games after another two school cancellations, the sports were light this week. The only action took place on Friday and Saturday, and the story of the weekend for North Shore basketball teams was loss – neither the Mariners nor the Agates won a game.

TH girls lose two

On Friday, the Two Harbors girls’ basketball squad played at home against the Isle team. The squad, which hails from the shores of Mille Lacs Lake in between Duluth and St. Cloud, easily took the Agates in the contest, winning 64-36. Senior Allison Nowacki led the scoring with 13 points and freshman Ayla Lemke and senior Lane Schraufnagel each had 6. It was no match for the Isle squad, especially leading scorer Andrea Zimpel who sank 21 points, including 4 shots from behind the three-point line. In total, almost half of Isle’s points came from behind the three-point line.

The girls also lost at Proctor to the Rails on Saturday. They fell in overtime 56-63. Junior Briana Stuberud led the team with 18 points and Schraufnagel had 15. The girls are now 5-4 and ranked third in the Polar League.

TH boys lose at Proctor

Both Agate teams lost to the Rails on Saturday, with the boys falling 64-76 after a strong second half from Proctor. Junior Alex Lemke led the scoring with 18 points, while senior Kyle Omtvedt had 13 (including three 3-point shots) and junior Kyler Kinn had 12.

The loss puts them at 5-5 for the season and fifth in the Polar League.

SB boys and girls fall to Barnum

The predictably strong Bombers steamrolled the Mariners — both the girls and the boys – on Friday at Barnum.

The girls only managed to scrape up 10 points to the 80 the Bombers put on the board.

The boys tallied 25 to the Bombers’ 85. Junior Spencer Tiboni led for the Mariners with 8 points and senior Eben Fischer had 6 points.

The girls are 0-8 and the boys are 1-6, putting both teams at the bottom of the Polar League.
