From Rob Best, Rivals coach

Rivals lose two, win one

On June13, the Rivals took on the Lakeview American Legion squad from Duluth. The result was a hard fought 4-1 loss. Kyle Omtvedt, Tim Bott and Mark Pearson each pitched two innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run. The bats took the night off as the team collected only three hits and twice had runners on second and third. With less than two outs, they couldn’t score, resulting in their first loss of the year.

The Rivals took on Taconite on June 16, a team consisting of players from Greenway, Nashwauk and Keewatin. The Rivals led throughout the game but the lead slipped away in the seventh as Taconite scored two and won the game by a score of 5-4. Omtvedt went the distance, giving up eight hits, striking out eight batters and walking no one. Hitting honors went to Lucas Kempffer and Alex Lemke with two hits each. Kempffer and Jonah Koehler each drove in two runs.

On June 23, the Rivals traveled to Esko and got back on the winning side, with a 3-1 victory. Defense was the key as a double play from Bott to Lemke to Timmy Luoma ended a threat, with some players in different positions than normal, turning in error free performances as well. Omtvedt again went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out six while walking one in masterful outing. Hitting honors went to Bott, with three hits and one RBI and Lemke, with two hits and one RBI. Zach Duresky added an RBI. The Rival’s next home game is scheduled for July 2, against the Esko team
