Mariners softball puts two in the win column

The Silver Bay softball team got in three games last Saturday at the Pine City invitational tournament. After beating both Hinckley-Finlayson and St. Croix Falls in five innings to advance to the championship game, they fell 11-0 to Cloquet in five innings.

Phoenix Lillis picked up the win in the Mariner’s first game, a 17-3 win over Hinckley. Lillis gave up one hit in the game — a three run homer off the bat of Dana Tekavec — and struck out five batters. Emma Bemlott, Ashley Peterson and Everly Bauck each went 3 for 3 at the plate and Erika Ernest was 3 for 4.

Bemlott picked up the win in game two, a 19-3 victory over St. Croix Falls of Wisconsin. Bemlott gave up three runs on four hits. Lillis went 3 for 4 along with Kayla Klofstad and Ernest. Brooke McMillen and Cora Carter each went 2 for 3.McMillen and Klofstad each scored three times, Lillis drove in four runs and Ernest had three RBIs.

The Mariners got off to a rough start against Cloquet as five walks and five errors led to a 6-0 Cloquet lead after one inning of play. Klofstad and McMillen each had a double in the game. Cloquet beat Pine City 7-1 and Proctor 11-7 to advance to the championship contest. The Mariners are now 2-3 this season.

The section 7A softball playoffs begin on May 19. Right now it looks like the earliest the Mariners could play again will be May 1. That would give the team 15 days to play 15 games in order to get in a full schedule. The Mariners are in better shape than a number of teams in that regard. Four teams in the section have yet to play a game.

Mariners baseball idled

The Mariner baseball team has yet to play a game. The section 7A baseball playoffs begin on May 24. Six other section 7A teams have played as many games as the Mariners.

Chad Nordean of Two Harbors and Tanner Ketola of Silver Bay each were selected to play for the District 11 High Performance 15 team and participated in the Select 15 spring festival last weekend.

Fishing opener may be on ice

If you need a reference point as whether or not there will be open water in the area for the fishing opener, there was 30” of ice on Nine Mile Lake on April 24.
